A bonded title is a process used by many states DMV offices that allows an individual to secure ownership for a vehicle or vessel they possess without a proper title.The following states: DE, DC, HI, KS, KY, LA, MD, NJ, ND, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, VA, and WV do not allow Title bonding.

Doing a bonded title process means you will be putting forth a monetary interest for the vehicle or vessel in the form of a Surety Bond that will be in effect with the vehicle record for a time frame specified by the state.

The Surety Bond is like an insurance policy on your ownership. Since you are claiming ownership without a proper title, the state will ask that you put forth a monetary interest (i.e. the Surety Bond) in case the previous owner wants to make a claim for the vehicle or vessel. Should a judge find that the previous owner has a rightful claim, the previous owners can only be awarded the value of the Surety Bond. The bonding company will be responsible for paying the claim, but will then come to you to recoup the money they’ve paid out on your behalf.
